Our fabulous handcrafted rooms are an ode to the traditional crafts of Andhra Pradesh. This is the first time that Tholu Bommalata (leather shadow puppetry), Budithi brass work, Kalamkari pen art and Etikoppaka toys have been used together to create an evolved aesthetic expression that is befitting of a setting in which our guests can be comfortably and leisurely introduced to these fascinating crafts. Since each artifact snugly tells a story of beauty, dignity, form, style and aesthetics, the hotel weaves a quaint tale of Andhra’s history.
Kalamkari or qalam kari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile produced in Andhra Pradesh, derived from the words qalam (pen) and kari (craftsmanship), meaning drawing with a pen. Out of the many beautiful forms of handicrafts, the Kalamkari in Andhra Pradesh has always been a favourite with the art and craft lovers. All the colours and dyes, which are used in the Kalamkari craft style, are made of natural products.
The Andhra Art & Craft Hotel is a celebration of art, style and design. Every space is a canvas for artistic expression and the individually designed rooms and suites feature plush furnishings. About 3000 years old, Kalamkari continues to allure the world with its unique hand-painted designs. The Kalamkari rooms are a colourful and vibrant representation of this traditional Indian craft. Using traditional motifs and adapting them to ocean-related scenes with animals and people, the headboard design features a striking work of art that is the quirk to the soul of the room. The woodwork around it is representative of the temple “stupas” that also transcend onto the bench base with hints of copper. The unusual colours bring the Kalamkari artwork to life.
